The Ultimate Decluttering Checklist Before Selling Your Home

Preparing your home for sale involves much more than a quick tidy before an open inspection. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to make your property more appealing to buyers is by decluttering.

A clutter-free home feels larger, brighter and more inviting. More importantly, it allows buyers to focus on the home itself rather than the belongings inside it.

Whether you’re planning to style your home yourself or work with a professional property stylist, this room-by-room decluttering checklist will help you create a space that buyers can instantly picture themselves living in.

Your Room-By-Room Decluttering Checklist:

Entryway

The entry sets the tone for the rest of the home.

Before every inspection:

  • Remove shoes and umbrellas
  • Store bags, hats and keys
  • Keep the console styling simple
  • Sweep the front porch
  • Remove excess pot plants or garden clutter

Living Room

The living room should feel spacious and easy to imagine relaxing in.

Remove:

  • Children’s toys
  • Remote controls
  • Charging cables
  • Excess cushions
  • Pet beds and bowls
  • Large collections of décor

Kitchen

Buyers love kitchens, but cluttered benchtops can instantly make them feel smaller.

Pack away:

  • Toasters
  • Air fryers
  • Coffee pods
  • Dish racks
  • Cleaning sprays
  • Tea towels
  • Fridge magnets and paperwork

Dining Room

Your dining area should encourage buyers to imagine entertaining family and friends. Keep the table styling minimal.

Remove:

  • Paperwork
  • School bags
  • Laptop chargers
  • Everyday storage

Bedrooms

Bedrooms should feel calm, spacious and restful.

Remove:

  • Family photographs
  • Excess cushions
  • Laundry baskets
  • Exercise equipment
  • Overflowing bedside tables
  • Declutter full wardrobes.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms should feel fresh, clean and hotel-like.

Hide:

  • Toothbrushes
  • Razors
  • Shampoo bottles
  • Skincare products
  • Cleaning products
  • Toilet brushes
  • Bath toys

Laundry

The laundry is often overlooked, but buyers notice it.

Remove:

  • Washing baskets
  • Cleaning chemicals
  • Loose pegs
  • Empty detergent containers
  • Mops and brooms

Home Office

If you have a study, make it feel organised and productive.

Clear away:

  • Paper piles
  • Printer boxes
  • Excess cables
  • Personal documents

Outdoor Areas

Outdoor spaces should feel like an extension of the home.

Declutter:

  • Garden tools
  • Children’s toys
  • Hoses
  • Wheelie bins
  • Pet items
  • Dead plants

A quick checklist before every inspection

Before buyers arrive, do one final walkthrough:

✓ Kitchen benchtops clear

✓ Beds made

✓ Bathroom products hidden

✓ Bins emptied

✓ Laundry packed away

✓ Windows cleaned

✓ Lights switched on

✓ Curtains open

✓ Fresh towels displayed

✓ Floors vacuumed

Decluttering isn’t about making your home feel empty. It’s about allowing buyers to see the space, appreciate its potential and begin imagining their own life there.

Combined with thoughtful property styling, decluttering can transform the way your home is perceived and help create a stronger emotional connection with buyers.
