Read on to learn more about Jess in our fun Q&A.
Q: First things first, are you a Jess or Jessica?
A: I am Jess.
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.
A: I am very excited to announce that I am the new In-House Stylist at Huntley + Co, but on my days off I’m just as creative and expressive! I enjoy cooking, sewing, painting, and eating delicious food if that counts as a hobby. I have always been the hands-on type and I enjoy being able to create and explore whenever I get the chance to. I am Australian born with Middle Eastern decent, but raised on the sunny coast of California – hence the accent.
Q: What led you to a career in styling?Â
A: For as long as I can remember, I have always been a creative individual. I was always exploring new avenues to express myself which eventually led me to study interior design at Sydney Design School. That is where I was able to first experience styling as a career pathway and explore the opportunities within that field.
As for my professional career, I have been working in customer service for almost 10 years now. I have found that being able to help people and bring a smile to their face is the most rewarding position I can be in. When I finished my studies, I was eager to find a role where I could combine my love for customer service and interior styling. That’s when I found Huntley + Co and I couldn’t be happier.
Q: Can you describe the services you’ll offer as our In-House Stylist?Â
A: As the In-House Stylist, I have the exciting opportunity of joining our clients in their styling journey and assisting them in creating schemes that suit their specific needs and design brief. In my role, I am available to assist with a range of design decisions. From selecting cushions to creating a complete room scheme, I am here to help in every way possible.
Q: When curating a scheme for a client, what is your process?
A: When creating a scheme for a home, I always start with furniture. Each home has its own story to tell and its location, design, layout and finishes play a big part in that. It’s important to select pieces that complement the home and highlight its unique features and selling points.
Once the furniture has been selected, I like to then select rugs. Rugs are a great way to designate zones within a space and they really link everything together.
After that, the most exciting part begins! When choosing décor and accessories, I like to start with finding artwork that suits the design style we are trying to achieve. Art is a beautiful finishing touch to any space, and it can actually drive a lot of your design decisions. Through art you can find inspiration for colours, shapes and even textures. Once you have found the perfect piece of art, everything else just falls into place.
Q: Do you have any particular design styles or trends that you are drawn to?
A: I have always been drawn to different trends and styles and can appreciate the beauty and thought behind them, but I tend to favour the modern organic trend the most. It is a beautiful play on minimalism and uses texture, natural materials, and greenery to make the space more warm and earthy.
Q: Where do you get your creative inspiration from?
A: I find that I get most of my inspiration from nature. There is so much beauty that can be seen in our natural environment especially when we start to investigate the tiny little details. Something as simple as a tree trunk can inspire a colour palette, shape, and concept. You can take it as far as you like if you open yourself to the possibilities.
And that’s a wrap… We are so thrilled to welcome Jess to our team and are confident she will be a valuable asset here at Huntley + Co. Please join us in extending a very warm welcome to Jess!
